They say the longer you’re dating, the more you end up incidentally dressing like one another. Whether that comes from a shared wardrobe, or just spending more and more time with your significant other, styling cues deep in a relationship are very often borrowed from very close to home. The ultimate dream for any couple, then, is to have a partner whose style is worth stealing.
It seems now, Kaia Gerber has well and truly found herself comfortable with the styling MO of her partner, actor and past Vogue Australia cover star Austin Butler. The model and actor cut a louche figure attending The Row’s spring/summer 2024 show in Paris overnight, in a boxy, grey oversized suit left unbuttoned, with a black, splayed collar blouse underneath. Even down to Gerber’s patent leather footwear, Butler might not be a heels man himself, but his love for a pointed patent leather derby or loafer is well-known.
This look is something of a uniform for Austin Butler. Butler’s extensive arsenal includes many a double-breasted blazer, silken undershirt, as well as his own spin on perfectly fitting trousers, crafted in everything from denim to wool. Gerber need only take one look at Butler’s catalogue of suiting moments to find plenty of looks worth adding her own spin to. Her take, a little more tailored and considered, showed a little more focus towards cut and fit.
Gerber and Butler have been slowly integrating each other’s style in both casual and formal contexts. Even the simple act of walking their dog, or heading to the shops, has seen both don their favourite It-shoes—Sambas—with just as desirable accessories in tow. You’d imagine it was only a matter of time before Butler’s signature suit became the next token—especially given the rise of the corporate-style suit on this season’s runways.
Just as the act of pinching your boyfriend’s perfectly fitting hoodie becomes a vestige of your love, so too is borrowing their very style, and adding your own spin on it. While sure, maybe fostering a stylish connection in your relationship might not be as high on your list as things like, say, loyalty, or words of affirmation; but a wardrobe worth taking inspiration from still ranks pretty highly on our list.
